Private tutor in Belmont, NC

Education

BA in English from James Madison University (3.7 GPA, minors in Creative Writing and Religion) , 2006 MA in English from the University of Georgia (3.6 GPA), 2008

Experience

4+ years of tutoring and teaching experience and 8+ years of communications experience in the federal government. I began my tutoring career when I was in high school, and I started tutoring middle school students in a variety of subjects. Later, during my time at graduate school, I tutored college students in philosophy, religion, English, and writing. I eventually became the Acting Director of the UGA writing center and taught writing courses. Following school, I spent nearly a decade working in communications for the federal government in Washington, DC. I am currently an adjunct instructor at Belmont Abbey College, where I teach rhetoric courses. My goal is to inspire my students to grow and challenge themselves as they realize what they learn in school and during tutoring session is not limited to the four walls of the classroom; their learning permeates far beyond into their own lives, future careers, and the rest of the world. The ability to communicate clearly is a critical life skill and is one of most highly sought after skills in the current job market, no matter the field.  Whether students leave my tutoring sessions and become novelists or electrical engineers, they will have gained invaluable writing, research, and critical thinking skills that will empower them to succeed in their careers of choice.  In my tutoring sessions, I incorporate all of my professional experiences, from inside and outside a university classroom, to foster an environment of learning and growth for my students. I believe that my teaching and tutoring experience and my career in the federal government make me a well-rounded, passionate, and dynamic tutor with real-life experiences of English application in the work place.

Hobbies

When I'm not teaching English, I spend my spare time reading wonderful novels and writing my own short stories. Some of my favorite books include, The Life of Pi, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Princess Bride, and The Alchemist, just to name a few. I also love animals and enjoy riding my horse, Rugby, and jogging with my dog, Pi. Additionally, my husband and I love to travel any chance that we get! Last year, we took an amazing trip to Italy (Rome and the Amalfi Coast), and this year, we have focused our travel to getting to know our new home state of NC from the mountains to the ocean.
